Gall Bladder and Bile Duct Cancer

Specialized Care for Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancers

Dr. Tushar Madake provides expert diagnostic and palliative endoscopic services for cancers of the gallbladder and bile ducts (cholangiocarcinoma), playing a key role in tissue diagnosis and managing biliary obstructions.

Cancers of the gallbladder and bile ducts are rare but serious. They often present with jaundice due to obstruction of the bile flow. Early diagnosis is challenging, but advanced endoscopic techniques are crucial for both diagnosis and management.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Dark urine and clay-colored stools
  • Abdominal pain, especially in the upper right side
  • Unexplained weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Itching (pruritus)

Risk Factors

  • Gallstones (chronic inflammation)
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)
  • Congenital bile duct cysts
  • Chronic infections (e.g., liver flukes)

Dr. Madake's Role in Diagnosis and Management

We utilize state-of-the-art endoscopy for both diagnosis and symptom relief.

  • Advanced Diagnostic Endoscopy:
    • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS): Dr. Madake uses EUS to obtain detailed images of the bile duct and gallbladder. He can perform EUS-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) to obtain a tissue sample for a definitive diagnosis.
    • ERCP with Cholangioscopy: This advanced technique allows us to directly visualize the bile duct, obtain targeted biopsies using a tiny camera (spyglass), and perform therapeutic interventions.
  • Palliative Biliary Drainage (ERCP): A common complication of these cancers is obstructive jaundice. Dr. Madake performs ERCP to place a metal or plastic stent into the bile duct. This opens the blocked duct, relieving jaundice, itching, and preventing infection. This is a critical procedure that significantly improves quality of life.
  • Multidisciplinary Team Coordination: After diagnosis and initial management, we coordinate care with a team of surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to develop a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, and/or radiation.
  • Ongoing Support: We provide compassionate support to manage symptoms and maintain the best possible quality of life throughout the treatment journey.

Dr. Madake's expertise in advanced endoscopy ensures that patients with these complex cancers receive the most accurate diagnosis and effective palliative care.
